Senior Electrical Engineer, Power Systems

As part of the Reliability Transmission & Distribution (T&D) team, you will support initiatives related to power system management for high voltage electrical equipment in the T&D jurisdiction at our base plant site. We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with high voltage electrical power systems experience to assist with technical issues, troubleshooting, analysis and continuous improvement to the power system.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Ensure compliance to all relevant Suncor policies and standards including the management of change (MOC) process and maintenance business processes
  • Track key parameters related to the T&D Power system operation (voltage, frequency, load flows, power factor) and provide guidelines to the operations team
  • Support the project development group by providing characteristics of the electrical system as well as assisting in the selection of potential project solutions
  • Assist with technical issues of improvements, design reviews and specifications, troubleshooting or failure analysis (FA), as well as, analysis of power system configuration during maintenance work and emergency conditions
  • Prepare documentation related to special planned outages highlighting the potential risks to the power system, mitigation measures and providing credible operational scenarios
  • Support our reliability improvement plan and processes and reinforce a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration
  • Execute power system criticality reviews and support risk assessments related to maintenance, project work execution and system operational configurations
  • Support project field walk downs  
  • Identify potential risks in the T&D power system, analyze them and propose mitigation measures including development of problem definition documents to initiate projects
  • Review, update and develop power system operational procedures as well as system drawings and single line diagrams
  • Drive a structured approach to uphold all health, safety and environment standards, and ensure effective actions and programs are in place to sustain safety and reliability performance goals

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • 8+ years of related experience working with high voltage electrical power systems
  • Strong knowledge of specific high voltage electrical equipment reliability and operations: power transformers, breakers, bus bar systems, instrument transformers, power cables, disconnect switches, electrical substations
  • Strong knowledge on power system analysis and studies (load flow, short circuit, harmonics, stability, contingency studies, and under frequency load shedding)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and at least one industry standard enterprise resource planning tool (e.g. SAP)
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • Registered or immediately eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Preference for:

  • Oil & gas or utilities industry experience
  • A multidisciplinary background in engineering, maintenance and operations
  • Certification in plant maintenance and reliability such as PEMAC, SMRP, CRE
  • Demonstrated use of key processes such as root cause analysis (RCA) and FA
  • Deep understanding of design codes and standards applicable to the electrical systems (e.g. CSA 22.3, AUEC, NETA, CSA-463, CSA-462)
  • A highly motivated self-starter with the ability to make decisions with integrity in order to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • Well-developed critical thinking, strong analytical skills and continuous improvement mindset, with an ability to apply logic and challenge assumptions, conclusions and make appropriate recommendations
  • A self-starter who is able to work in a multidisciplinary, integrated team environment
  • Ability to provide personal and technical mentorship to junior staff members

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Site in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday; with the potential for on-call hours based on business needs
  • This position is safety sensitive
  • This position is security sensitive which requires you to clear a criminal history check
  • If you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided; we offer highly competitive housing assistance to eligible individuals
