Senior Engineer, Tailings Design

Reporting to the Tailings Mid-Range Planning Team Leader, you will be responsible to deliver a midrange (0-5 years) mine & tailings plan to the ACFTs and provide project support for Tier 1-3 projects.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Provide mid-term planning (0-5 years) for tailings operations
  • Work on integrated project teams as the tailings planning representative
  • Evaluate scenarios to quantify risk and tactical direction for the operation.
  • Identify and design tailings road and pipeline corridors to meet the business plan need
  • Review mid and long-term tailings plan, identify gaps, mitigate risks and optimize opportunities
  • Optimize the mid-range plan (0-5 years) through stakeholder engagement as well as planning and project design to ensure they are executable and constructible
  • Provide guidance to the budget & business plan
  • Provide service to other business units that support the tailings plan
  • Continuously improve the safety, environmental and cost performance of the business
  • Provide senior engineering experience and advice on improving performance through application of established standards, benchmarking, and evaluation of new technologies
  • Coach and mentor engineering staff in application of OHS Code, APEGA requirements, productivity, and leadership skills

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Five or more years of related experience in Tailings and/or Oil Sands
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Civil or Mining Engineering
  • Registered, or are eligible to register, as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA)
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record
  • A continuous improvement mindset and can seek greater knowledge and understanding of the systems, process, and hazards in the workplace
  • Alignment with our values: safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity

Preference for:

  • Strong collaboration skills that enables you to build strong, positive relationships with diverse groups
  • Computer CAD design experience with MineScape or similar

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine in Fort McMurray, Alberta OR our Calgary head office, located in the Suncor Energy Centre at 150 – 6th Ave S.W.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday
