Indirect Tax Specialist, International Commodity Transactions

We are seeking a trusted business advisor to provide timely, effective and pragmatic indirect tax advice pertaining to Suncor’s supply, trading, optimization and marketing activities.  Your strong technical knowledge of commodity taxes applicable to the physical trading of crude and refined products will be critical to achieve the growth and goals of Suncor’s trading business.

Working in close collaboration with the traders and other Suncor stakeholders, you will provide advice to our trading business on US and other international commodity tax consequences applicable to various crude and refined products transactions undertaken in the US and other international jurisdictions and work with Suncor’s indirect tax team to support the commodity tax cycle, from planning advice on how transactions should be structured to compliance and audit support.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Act as technical tax expert regarding US indirect taxes with a focus on fuel tax application providing pragmatic and technically accurate advice, communicated in a manner that is tailored to individual needs
  • Interact extensively with Suncor’s trading business and directly support the traders in structuring and implementing transactions in the most efficient manner
  • Support the business unit in sound-decision making by providing relevant commodity tax advice and insight.
  • Collaborate with the functions supporting the Supply, Trading and Optimization (ST&O) organization to understand the broader impacts of transaction structuring within and outside of Finance
  • Keep abreast of new tax legislation, administrative positions, case law, etc. that will impact Suncor and advise in the development of Suncor’s position as it relates to trading activities Collaborate with the indirect tax team and external advisors to ensure the timely and accurate filing of US and international commodity tax returns
  • Support US commodity tax audits to, filing protests, litigation, negotiating settlements, etc. related to the ST&O business.  For international indirect taxes, work collaboratively with external advisors to manage these responsibilities
  • Provide mentorship, guidance and support provided to all tax advisors/analysts within the Indirect Tax department and the broader tax group

We’d like to review your application if you have…

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • A CPA designation or LLB (Bachelor of Laws)
  • Ten years of relatable experience in the indirect tax department of a major international company or an accounting or law firm
  • In-depth understanding of return filing requirements for all US and international commodity and property taxes for US and non-US trading activities, with the support of external advisors
  • Multi project management and execution experience
  • Ability to think strategically, attuned to market, economic and business trends; with a balanced perspective of stakeholders and formulating balanced, risk-conscious decisions
  • Demonstrated leadership traits of transparency, objectivity, humility, equitable, effective problem –solving and decision- making
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in US sales and use tax, fuel tax, property tax, and environmental taxlaws
  • An ability to learn different types of indirect taxes and tax laws of different jurisdictions applicable to commodity trading as well as a good understanding of systems and software for the appropriate implementation of strategies
  • Ability to apply taxation principles and assess options to minimize risk and maximize returns of financial transactions
  • Ability to work effectively with tax authorities regarding various relevant US indirect tax issues and work collaboratively with external experts with respect to international indirect tax disputes to successfully resolve tax issues

Preference for:

  • Experience with trading businesses
  • Knowledge of bolt-on tax software, such as Sabrix and Avalara, as well as other relevant software

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other meaningful information:

  • You will work out of our Houston office, located in 2 Allen Center in downtown Houston, combined with remote work arrangements in response to COVID-19
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, with the potential for extended work hours based on business needs
