Supply, Trading and Optimization’s Downstream Crude Optimization team is looking for someone to play a key role in supporting our Commerce City (Denver) refinery to optimize feed slate through the integrated planning process, provide economic and marginal value evaluation and respond to all plant operational upsets in a timely and effective manner.

You will use your expertise to:

  • Interface with the refinery, pipeline, and third-party facilities to optimize short-term and long-term crude operations and initiate opportunities for improved crude supply to the refinery
  • Participate in the short term estimate (STE) plans, and understand and anticipate the impact of all operational changes to refinery crude supply, pricing calls and refinery run rates
  • Work with crude optimization, trading, crude scheduling, and product supply to optimize all crude dispositions and acquisitions
  • Interface and transact with Colorado crude producers to ensure an optimized crude slate for the Refinery
  • Identify and take advantage of opportunities around crude and collaborate with the other refineries to leverage synergies
  • Manage and build value for Suncor, identifying opportunities, clearly defining alternatives, evaluating risk, and highlighting value created
  • Contribute to supply planning optimization in order to address complex multi-locational turnaround outages
  • Develop mitigating options in unplanned outage situations, balancing value and risk to both the Refinery and Upstream Supply, to drive the optimal integrated strategy
  • Provide an understanding of, and recommendations for, the refinery crude logistics to the business development and legal groups
  • Build strong, positive relationships and manage agreements with counterparties as required
  • Participate in several projects and integration work for supply, trading and optimization

Must-haves (minimum requirements):

  • Seven or more years of related analysis, scheduling and/or marketing, trading, and refinery supply experience
  • A post-secondary education in a related field such as Finance, Accounting, Engineering
  • An understanding of customer requirements, products/service offerings, markets and competitors, pricing, and financial modeling fundamentals
  • Highly developed analytical skills in order to assess dynamic operations and choose the optimal outcome
  • A deep understanding of the operations and economic drivers across the value chain
  • Excellent social, communication and negotiating skills to successfully resolve complex market, counterparty, and customer issues
  • Proven ability to problem-solve and translate complex operational choices and deviations to upstream and downstream logistics, market opportunities and constraints
  • Alignment with our values: safety above all else, stronger together, operational discipline, curiosity and lifelong learning, and act with integrity

Preference for:

  • Commercial or trading experience
  • Exposure to refinery operations and an associated understanding of Canadian, U.S. and international crude production and markets

Where you’ll be working, your work schedule, and other important information:

  • You will work out of our Houston office, located at 2 Allen Centre, 1200 Smith St.
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday, but intermittent 24/7 coverage is required when responding to operational events
  • You will work in an open-concept area
  • Occasional travel may be required
