Job Overview:

Reporting to the manager, crude risk, you as the senior crude risk advisor – USA (Suncor Energy (U.S.A.) Marketing Inc.; Houston, TX) will make recommendations on crude oil trading risk management issues in consultation with colleagues and with consideration to impacts on current and future processes and operations. Issues may include evaluation of proposed new business initiatives, new software enhancements, or adaptation to evolving business dynamics.

Key Accountabilities

  • Resolve risk management problems, identify areas for continuous process improvement and implement solutions.
  • Lead application and delivery of risk management services, processes, and software related to Houston based crude oil trading activities within the Supply, Trading, and Optimization division.
  • Maintain a functional Subject Matter Expertise level of knowledge for Enterprise Trading Risk Management software - Triple Point Commodity XL (CXL) version 7.12 utilized to manage physical and financial crude trading activity within integrated North American distribution channels.
  • Provide functional advisory support to USA based co-located colleagues, as the on-site CXL software application Subject Matter Expert. Recognize and communicate CXL issues occurring or having the potential to occur in other functional areas of trading operations, including contracts, confirmations, legal, trading risk, credit risk, settlements, accounting and governance.
  • Present relevant updates and changes in the local market area to senior management and/or functional peer groups.
  • May be required to attend and/or participate at industry Working Groups and Conferences to represent Suncor's interests for emerging Risk Management issues in the local market area.

Required Qualifications:

Experience and Education:

  • Must have a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field plus 3 years' experience in an accounting, finance, or closely related role. In lieu of a Bachelor's degree employer will accept 2 additional years of experience in an accounting, finance, or closely related role.
  • Of the required experience, must have 2 years' experience in each of the following: utilizing Energy Trading Risk Management software; utilizing Commodity XL (CXL) version 7 or higher for physical and financial crude oil trading and marketing activity; and utilizing CXL to provide user support to Traders, Analysts, Schedulers, Risk Analysts, and Accounting personnel.
  • Of the required experience must have one year of experience in each of the following: performing risk management activities in a crude oil marketing and trading environment; assisting with crude trading cycle requirements; utilizing commodity derivatives to hedge underlying physical exposures; conducting analyses of trading activity against risk parameters, attribution of profit and loss, and compliance parameters; and assessing the impact of existing and emerging regulatory rules on current trading activity, and escalating compliance issues in a regulatory environment.
  • Any suitable combination of education, training, or experience is acceptable.
