Engineer, Materials and Corrosion

Job Overview

Reporting to the manager, reliability improvement, you will improve plant reliability by supporting the materials and corrosion engineering needs of the Sarnia refinery.

Key Accountabilities

  • Develop, revise, implement and sustain corrosion hazard analysis (CHA), including corrosion control documents and integrity operating windows (IOWs), and integrate them with PHA, operating envelope and risk based inspection (RBI) programs
  • Support development and implementation of (RBI) programs
  • Oversee corrosion control and inhibition programs such as wash water, chemical injection and cathodic protection
  • Support the evaluation of refinery and unit feed slate changes for potential corrosion risks in process units
  • Provide evaluation of corrosion related risks and recommended mitigation for MOCs where increased corrosion damage is a risk
  • Collaborate with inspection, reliability and process engineering to investigate, risk assess and mitigate plant corrosion issues in refinery process units during normal operations, unit shutdowns and turnarounds
  • Participate in, or lead root-cause failure investigations for issues related to materials and corrosion
  • Recommend optimum materials selection where material changes or upgrades are required for projects, maintenance outages and major turnarounds
  • Support implementation of pressure equipment integrity management (PEIM) program
  • Provide support to cross-functional team on need basis, with a focus on safe, reliable and efficient operations

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Ten or more years of industry experience, preferably in a refinery, petrochemicals or hydrocarbon processing facility
  • Post-secondary education in engineering, preferably with a materials and/or corrosion specialization
  • Professional Engineer (PEng) designation considered as asset

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Able to assess and control corrosion problems in a wide variety of refinery process units
  • Excellent knowledge of materials, damage mechanisms, inspection, design and repair of  fixed equipment and piping
  • Knowledge and application of jurisdictional and industry related codes, standards and recommended practices applicable to damage mechanisms, corrosion control, RBI, fixed equipment, piping, tanks and welding is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and lead multidisciplinary technical teams to achieve objectives in a timely manner
  • You constantly ask what could go wrong and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions and learn to anticipate potential problems
