Lab Technician, Quality Assurance

Job Overview

Are you passionate about working within a positive team environment, possess strong attention to detail and integrity then we have the role for you. Reporting to the lab supervisor you will be responsible for quality data and ways to improve lab efficiency and accuracy through quality analysis, testing improvements, etc. with collaboration with other technicians and the quality assurance staff.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the journey to zero safety culture of Suncor and keep environmental responsibility foremost in mind
  • Perform property testing on various refinery streams and finished products
  • Follow statistical rules and perform corrective actions
  • Perform minor maintenance and troubleshooting on laboratory equipment
  • Record all testing results in the lab information management system
  • Elevate and communicate data results that do not meet product specifications

Required Qualifications

Experience and Education:

  • Experience in a petroleum refinery laboratory or other analytical laboratory
  • Experience with gas chromatography instrumentation and software as well as ISO 9001 standard compliance and requirements
  • Environmental lab experience is an asset
  • University level science degree or chemical engineering technologist diploma or equivalent education
  • Possess a valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Proficient with good lab practices (GLP) knowledge and skills along with statistical process control and statistical techniques
  • Highly motivated to achieve the best results and deliver the most value
  • You possess strong communication skills both verbally and written
  • You have strong time managements skills, well organized with the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Keen attention to detail and strong work ethic

Working Conditions

  • The position has a 6-month probationary period which thereafter is represented by the Sarnia employees' bargaining association (SEBA)
  • The shift schedule is an alternating schedule of six weeks of eight hour days then four weeks of shift rotation (Specifically: Mon. and Tues. days – Wed. afternoon – Thurs. and Fri. off – Sat. and Sun. days – Mon. and Tues. afternoons – Wed., Thurs. and Fri. off – Sat. and Sun. afternoons – Mon., Tues. and Wed. off – Thurs., Fri., Sat, and Sun. days – Mon. and Tues. off -  Wed. days – Thurs. and Fri. afternoon then the day rotation starts again for 6 weeks; ten hour shifts from 7 am to 5 pm during the day shift and 1:30 pm to 11:30 pm for the afternoon shift).  Note: while on shift you’re not able to take time off
